One Republic I Lived

앨범을 정리하다 예전에 책을 읽으며 인상깊어 캡쳐해 둔 글귀를 읽게 되었다.

“작은 것들을 사랑하지 말아라.
작은 것들은 언젠가 너를 울게 만든다.”

“아빠”의 이 조언은 “아이”가 너무 잦은 슬픔을,
감정적인 고통을 겪지 않았으면 하는 마음에 나온 것일 것이다.
안 그래도 이 세상은 극복해 나가야 할 고난으로 가득 차 있으니까.

묵묵히 아빠의 조언을 가슴에 새겨둔 아이는
아빠의 죽음마저 조언에 빗대 담담하게 묘사한다.

비록 그 순간은 눈물이 흐르고 너무나 슬프겠지만,
상실의 경험은 그 사람을 성장 시킨다.

“아빠의 조언”에 더 나아가 나는 이런 이야기를 해주고 싶다.

“작은 것 마저 열렬히 사랑해라.
사랑한 것을 잃는 상실마저 온건히 받아들이면
잃기 전 매 순간을 열렬히 사랑하는 법을 배울 것이다.”

이 글을 보고,
문득 머릿속에 One Republic의 I Lived 란 노래의 가사가 떠올랐다.

I LIved는 One Republic의 보컬 라이언 테더가 본인의 아들을 위해 쓴 노래라고 한다.

가사를 보면
아들이 두려움을 떨치고 모든 것을 겪으며
풍성한 삶을 살기를 바라는,
아빠의 애틋한 마음이 느껴진다.

아들이 고통을 겪지 않는 것이 아니라
오히려 고통을 통해 한층 성장하고
도전으로 가득 찬 인생을 살길 원하는 내용이 인상적이었다.

우연치 않게 뮤직비디오를 보고
잔잔하지만 깊은 의미와 큰 사랑이 느껴져
반복적으로 틀어 놓고 들었던 경험이 있다.
